1 John 1:5-10 Commentary

     Read 1 John 1:5-10
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Where there is light, darkness cannot be found. You know this, if you shine a flashlight on a wall there is no darkness unless the light is covered up. God shines bright through you if you let Him and you don't cover Him up.

John 8:12 says:
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
I love how this verse says whoever follows me WILL not walk in darkness. It doesn't say "oh yeah if you follow me you might not walk in the darkness anymore." It says we won't walk in the darkness.

Verse seven talks about how God has a remedy for our sins. If we live in the light and proclaim Christ is Lord and follow the Roman Road we will live with fellowship with one another.

Verse eight talks about how we can't claim to be a Christian and live in darkness. Psalm 89:15 says:
Lord, your loyal followers are happy. They live in the light of your kindness.
But after all this God still forgives us.
